La Rotonda, Vicenza, Italy - C.1550 - 1570
Architect: Andrea Palladio
Set on a hilltop on the outskirts of Vicenza this Pantheonic type Villa has Ionic porticoes on all four sides. One might suggest that it is “The Ultimate Belvedere”!
Palladio’s (whose real name, incidentally was Gondola) buildings and writings were, and still are hugely influential to Western Architecture. In England, Inigo Jones was the first to revive “Palladianism” with his “Queens House” in Greenwich, a model of which we have also made.
The model is made in plaster with additional detailing in etched brass and lead.
It set on a 23” diameter base with the great architect’s name in relief around the edge.
The model was created for the “Celebrating Palladio” exhibition in November 2008 in Pimlico, London.
A one of version, cast in red & blue was also created. Click here to see an image of that model with Tim “lurking” in the background.
